Q: How do I discontinue, resign, delete, or put my account on hold?

We're sorry to hear that you are interested in discontinuing your account. We hope that it's because you met someone!

If not, please take into consideration all the great features that you've become accustomed to, like sending and receiving messages and more!

The way this works is different depending on whether you're currently a paid subscriber or whether you use a free membership account. See the FAQ "Discontinuing a Paid Membership" if you're a paid subscriber.

If you're a free member, log on to the site and click on the "Manage Account" icon. There, you have an array of options to choose from.

The "Hide profile" option allows you to keep your account active while, at the same time, keep others from viewing it. You can un-hide it if at some future time you wish to return to seeking your geek match.

You can also send an email to our customer service representative to cancel your membership for you.

Using either option will protect your privacy from others seeing your profile information.

Q: How do I reinstate my account
If you previously set your account to "Is Hidden" (on your account page), simply un-check that box. Your profile will again appear and be in full force.

If you previously un-checked the "Is active" box, you can reinstate your account yourself. On the account settings page, re-check the "Is active" box and submit and your account is active again.

If your account has been deleted, and you believe it was done in error, contact us to review your account so that we can determine the appropriate action to take.

Q: How do I discontinue my free membership account?

If you're a free member, log on to the site and click on the "Manage Account" icon. There, you have an array of options to choose from.

The "Hide profile" option allows you to keep your account active while, at the same time, keep others from viewing it. It is the recommended option if you have any doubt that you may want to use the site again in the future.

You also have the option to cancel your account completely by un-checking the "Is active" box. Your information is stored in our database for legal and historical purposes only. If at some future time you wish to re-instate it, you can do so by re-logging in to Geek 2 Geek.

Using either option will protect your privacy from others seeing your profile information.

Q: How can I increase the number of responses that I am getting?
If you're not getting the responses you are hoping for, consider the following:

First, if you don't have a photo, add one. This is the fastest and easiest thing you can do to increase your responses. Statistics prove that profiles with photos are up to 15 times more likely to receive attention than profiles without.

Second, if you're not receiving any responses at all, be sure you're checking for responses at the email address you gave us when you signed up. It could be that your responses are simply landing at a different address of yours! If you are looking at the right address, also check whether you might have a Spam filter that's sending Geek 2 Geek messages to the wrong folder. Check with your email provider about how to add Geek 2 Geek as a trusted sender.

Third, you might want to take advantage of the profile and photo tips. This page is packed with tips and expert advice.

Fourth, we recommend making a lot of initial contact attempts. It may also help to expand your search criteria in order to find more prospective matches. Be sure and take advantage of the Advanced Search features of the site and experiment with different search parameters.

PROFILE QUESTIONS

Q: Why don't my profile changes appear when I view my profile?

The text and pictures have to be approved before they will appear. Approval takes place within 24 hours of being submitted. Then your full profile will appear and you can take advantage of all the site’s features.

Q: Why was my profile disapproved?

The Terms of Service prohibit certain content on a profile. There are four main categories of grounds for disapproval:

  1. Content that would identify the member elsewhere outside of the Geek 2 Geek site.
  2. Content that is offensive.
  3. Content that is commercial in its purpose, such as advertising.
  4. Content that attempts to circumvent the commercial purposes of Geek 2 Geek.

Q: Why can't I create a new profile?

Only one profile can be created with a specific email address. Our system requires a unique email address for each user. Once a username is selected, it can't be changed. You can, of course, log in with the original username and make the changes you want to the already existing profile.

Q: Why can't I upload a picture?
Please be sure your photo is in the form of a jpg, jpeg, or gif file. That should work.

Q: What is the display name? What are the requirements? How is it different than the User Name?

A Display Name is a required component of your profile.  It's a unique word or phrase that you select that will be visible to other users as a form of identification on the site.  Your Display Name should not correspond in any way to your User Name nor your identity outside Geek 2 Geek – ensuring that your anonymity is protected until you decide to reveal it.

Your Display Name must meet the following guidelines for approval:

  • Can only contain letters, numbers or the "underscore" character
  • Do not include detailed personal information (i.e.: your last name, street address, contact information, date of birth, etc.) to help protect your online anonymity
  • Do not include any language which could be considered defamatory or offensive in any way (i.e.: sexually explicit, promotes racism, references to inflicting bodily harm to yourself or others, etc.)

To edit your display name, please log in to your account and follow these steps:

  1. Click My Profile on the navigation bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Click Change Profile.
  3. Click on Step 3.
  4. Click on your display name and make any necessary changes.
  5. Click Save and Continue.

Q: Is there a way to hide and unhide my profile without deleting my profile? I want to create my profile but I'm not ready to look right now.
You can easily hide and unhide your profile. From your home page, click on the "Manage Account" link, and check the "Is Hidden" box to hide your profile. When you want to start using the site, go back to the account settings page and un-click the same box.

Q: Are there any restrictions as to what kind of pictures we can upload?
Pictures may not be obscene, nor may they provide any information that would allow the viewer to identify the member using other means.

Q: I changed my match descriptions only to 'save & continue' and find that they weren't saved. Why does this keep happening?
Perhaps you're looking at the "View My Profile" result after you've made changes. Your profile changes have actually been recorded, but they won't be visible to others until they are approved by our reviewer. Reviews are done within 24 hours of being submitted. Please be patient.

Q: I see a lot of profiles like "California Man" "Looking for women in California". What does this mean?
Before a member's display name and headline can appear in their profile, it has to be approved. This is necessary to prevent misuse of the Terms of Service. For example, we would disapprove any offensive headline. So, until a member's display name and headline are approved, they will appear as "(state or country) man/woman)" and "Looking for men/women in (state or country)". These are not necesssarily scammers or unacceptable members.

Q: is there a way of knowing who has rated your profile? or is that confidential?
We feel that if we indicated who has rated a profile, then people wouldn't be honest in their ratings, a low rating might inspire retaliation. You always have the option of removing all past ratings from your profile. We hope that, when a member sees that he/she has been givne a poor rating, it is an indication that their profile needs to be improved. This rating system is intended to be constructive.

Q: What is a Flirt? How does it work?
What is a Flirt?

All members, regardless of subscription status, can send a Flirt, as long as their profile is visible.

How does it work?

Viewing your Flirts
To find the list of your Flirts, visit your Home page and click on the "My messages and Flirts" icon at the top of the page. Clicking on the name of the sender will open a their profile page for you to see if there's a mutual interest.

SITE NAVIGATION TIPS

Q: Why a special dating site for Geeks?

Geeks are special. Their interests just aren't the same as most people's. As a result, traditional dating sites just don't work well for them. For one thing, if you're looking for a geek, you'll have to sift through tons of profiles on other sites before you'll find any. For another, the kinds of activities asked about on the other sites are of little interest to geeks.

Q: What is the "Quick Look"?
When you see a summary profile of someone who you think may be a good match, you can click on the "Quick Peek" icon there. A new window will appear that shows their full profile. If, after viewing that profile, you're not interested, simply close that window and you will be taken back to your previous page.

MATCHES AND FAVORITES

Q: How do I make a member a "favorite"?

Great question.  When you see a member that is of interest to you, simply click on the "favorites" icon listed next to their profile.  This will save it in your "favorites" section and be accessible from your member dashboard page.

Q: My matches don't correspond to the things I asked for in a match
The matches that are sent are suggestions, based on the overall criteria you selected. The best way to search for exact matches is to log on to the site, click on the "Match Search" icon, where you can look for people that match your exact specific criteria.

Q: How do I save a match?
There are two ways to keep track of a member that you're interested in. First, if that member has been shown as a "match" from us, you can click on the box in their short profile that says "Save Match". Their profile will then continue to appear in your matches until you un-check that box.

If you do a search for matches and find someone you're interesed in, you can make that member a "Favorite". Simply click on the "Add Favorite" icon in their full profile. All your favorites can then be viewed by clicking on the "My favorites" icon on your home page.

Q: The matches you're sending me are the same ones I've seen before
We do a search for matches every night. When you log in, look at the most recent matches we've found for you. Save the ones you want to keep on your profile. If you're not interested in any of them, check the box "not interested". Then we'll know not to send that member's profile to you again.

CHAT (CURRENTLY INACTIVE)

Q: What should I do if someone is abusive or offensive on chat?
There are two things you should do. First is to use the "Report member" icon which you will find on that member’s profile. Tell us what the member did. Then, also, click on the "Block member" icon so that the member can no longer contact you.

Q: How do I start a chat with a member?
First, on that member’s profile, you will find an icon that indicates you wish to chat/favorite. Click on it. The member will get a message that you are interested in chatting. If the member is online, you can initiate chat right away, assuming your subscription status permits chatting.

Q: What is the group chat?
When it’s available, there is a chat room for all members to participate in. It’s designed for general dating discussions and not meant to facilitate one-on-one chat. See the chat rules for a list of things that are not allowed in the chat room. A moderator will be in the room and monitoring chat. Anyone who the moderator sees is violating the rules can be removed and prohibited from chat and/or using the entire site.

Q: Why do you require me to be online to chat with another member?
We are concerned about your safety. The online chat function allows you to remain anonymous. By using our chat, you do not have to provide anyone with your personal identity until you are ready to do so.

Q: How do I remove someone from my private chat list?
Click on the "My Favorites" Icon on your home page. There you will see the profile summaries of all your favorites and chat friends. Click on the "Remove" button of the person you want to remove.

MISCELLANEOUS

Q: What do I do if I am contacted by a scammer on your site?

We try very hard to screen out scammers, but some of them do get through. If you suspect someone is a scammer, please notify us using the "Report a problem" or "Contact Us" form and we will look into it and let you know the result of our investigation.

We always recommend caution when corresponding with other members on our site. See more information in the "About Gk2Gk" section.

Q: Is online dating safe?
There is much that persons can and should do to protect themselves when joining an internet dating site. Rather than a negative, when used properly, online dating sites can provide a safer way to meet people because they allow their members as much time as they need to get to know each other anonymously before taking the step of meeting.
